The orange colored crew transfer vessels (CTVs) attract attention at Scheepswerf Delfzijl. To give people the opportunity to view them up close, inside and out, the yard will hold an open day on Saturday 18 February from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
In this winter period there are often three or four CTV vessels on the slipway and in front of the quay for maintenance. The striking ship shapes and color scheme ensure that people regularly come to take a look at the harbor and at the wharf.
What kind of ships are these and what are they used for? is the question that lives with many. A CTV is used to bring maintenance and inspection specialists to offshore gas/oil installations and offshore wind turbine sites.
46 kilometers per hour
To do this quickly and comfortably, people often opt for a catamaran type ship, made of special aluminum. Depending on the type and size of the ship, several ‘smaller’ engines are often installed with a total capacity of about 2500 hp, with which a speed of approximately 25 knots (46 kilometers per hour) can be reached. The ships moor in a special way against a platform or wind turbine to transfer people.
The yard has focused on maintaining these ships with their special underwater ship shape. Because these aluminum ships are built and repaired under the supervision of a classification society, the yard has an LMK certificate for this and the welders themselves are also certified.
Guided tour of the ship
During the open day, visitors are shown around the ship with explanations from the crew present. A ship is standing dry on the wharf to view the underwater hull. At the office, an explanation is given about the work on the site. Videos can be seen about the work at sea with these ships.
People who are not only interested in the ships, but also looking for a job in maintenance or who want to sail on these vessels are also very welcome.
