Ons Dorp: Traveling with the ‘old people’ in 1950

In this first episode of Our village the ‘old people’ from Bergen go on a day trip via the Zaanse Schans to Amsterdam. It takes place in 1950. At that time it was common in many villages for the elderly to go out together once a year. These trips were organized by the associations and the middle class. There were fixed destinations for the outings all over the country and there was always filming. In this way the participants and their relatives could enjoy it again months later on a special evening in the village hall.

This series shows what life used to be like in our province. Everyday life and special events have been recorded by amateur film-makers. The historical images have been collected in recent years by the Regional Archive Alkmaar and mostly come from private property. Some statues are unique and have never been seen before.
