Hamburg (dpa) – Of the three German starters in the round of 16 of the Handball European League, only Bundesliga leader SC Magdeburg has reached the next round.
Coach Bennet Wiegert’s team won the second leg against Sporting Lisbon 36:35 (21:19). The Füchse Berlin failed against HBC Nantes from France, the TBV Lemgo Lippe against Wisla Plock from Poland.
After the 29:29 in the first duel, the narrow victory in the second leg was enough for the Magdeburg team, which national player Lukas Mertens secured a few seconds before the end. Four minutes before the final whistle, SCM was two goals down. After the end of the game, there were still some ugly scenes between the two teams and officials.
In the quarter-finals, the Sachsen-Anhalt team will now face Nantes, who also won the second duel against Füchse Berlin. After the 25:24 there was a 33:30 (14:15) victory for the French in the German capital on Tuesday. TBV Lemgo Lippe achieved a 28:28 (13:12) with the top Polish team from Plock on Tuesday, but that was not enough after the 28:31 in the first meeting.
