Only one runway open at Schiphol due to turbulent winds

Air traffic at Schiphol is affected by the strong southwest wind. Currently, only the Schiphol-Oost runway is available for landing aircraft, which is particularly noticeable above the center of Amsterdam. The wind is too strong to allow air traffic to land on the other five runways at Schiphol. Many aircraft therefore have to fly waiting circles above South Holland, Flevoland and the North Sea.

The Polderbaan was also open earlier this morning, but it could no longer be used for landing aircraft due to strong crosswinds. A number of flights that were supposed to land on the Polderbaan had to make a go-around and were diverted to the Oostbaan. All arriving air traffic is now handled on the Oostbaan, the shortest runway at Schiphol.

The pilots of a Korean Air cargo flight from Frankfurt chose eggs for their money after two failed landing attempts, which went weeks and flew back to Germany.

Too big

Aircraft that are too large for the Oostbaan or whose pilots prefer to have a longer runway at their disposal, may land on the Kaagbaan between the take-off traffic. The largest aircraft in the world, the Airbus A380, just flew a different route above Amsterdam for that reason.
