There are several locations where 100 Mpbs is not even reached | In times of telecommuting and large data downloads, speed is essential

Only half of the municipalities of Cordova have ‘fast’ internet in more than 90% of their homes. And although, according to data from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, the optimal internet reaches 89% of homes in the province, the truth is that There are great differences between territories.

Thus, 89% of the homes that are registered in the cadastre in the province of Córdoba have Internet coverage that reaches 100 megabits per second (Mpbs). This means that they have a speed of optimal internet, fast, although not the fastest on the market (Understanding that among those who have that speed there are also those who have contracted an even higher connection). The Mpbs represent the unit with which the transmission of computer data is measured and with a look at any website of operators of Internet It can be seen that the megabits that are offered now exceed, and by far, those 100 Mpbs, with packages that come to offer one Gb, that is, 1,000 Mpbs. If the unit of 100 is used as a reference, it is because this figure is the maximum offered by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation in its reports on broadband coverage in Spain. The last available is from 2021 and uses the 2020 cadastre.

Regarding the coverage for territoriesin 37 of 75 locations in Córdoba (the report does not include La Guijarrosa or Fuente Carreteros) more than 90% of households have fast internet accessat a time when it has become an essential tool that is used, for example, to work from home, but also to view audiovisual content that requires a very good connection to be viewed correctly or to connect numerous devices to the network, from a computer, even mobile phones, TV or even some household appliances.

Meanwhile, there are 26 municipalities where the number of homes with that appropriate internet is between 70 and 90%. The localities in the province where the number of houses of this type is reduced represent a small number, but it should be remembered that they do not even access those 100 Mpbs, which is not a very high amount in these times. According to data from the aforementioned ministry, there are seven municipalities with a percentage of between 50 and 70% of their homes that have this access, which are Adamuz, Alcaracejos, Cardeña, Iznájar, Montoro, Villanueva del Rey and Villaviciosa.

internet slower than fast

There are still five municipalities to name where the number of homes with access to 100 Mpbs connection is practically non-existent. In Santaella 16% is touched, in yearn it remains at 0.16% and in Montalban at 0.15%. In Valenzuela Y Villaralto that percentage stays at zero.

The speed and quality of the internet that reaches a home has a lot to do with the technology used for it. Broadband coverage in the province is not bad and the connection reaches practically every corner, but in the same ministerial report there is a clear relationship between the municipalities with the fewest homes with good internet and the most present technology in them. In this way, in those localities where there are few homes with access to those 100 Mpbs, the most present technology is VDSL (like ADSL, but improved), but there is neither FTTH nor HFC. FTTH is basically fiber optics, a material with a high capacity for data transmission, more than copper, which is the one used by ADSL. As for HFC, it is optical fiber plus coaxial cable and in the province it can only be found in the capital.

In this case, fiber optics pure reaches 88.84% of households in the province (more than the national average, 87.45%), HFC slightly exceeds 22% and VDSL is reduced to 14.57%. The report also indicates that 95.25% of homes in the entire province have at least 30 Mpbs, a coverage that has already become scarce, but that allows Internet access without problems.

With hardly any implementation of 5G technology

The 5G it is a relatively recent technology. It is the fifth generation (hence its name) of mobile networks. The 1G was used by those phones that were only used to talk, with the 2G SMS arrived, the internet appeared with the 3G and the 4G brought broadband (much faster internet, basically). 5G has several differences with 4G, but the most basic has to do with speed, which can reach ten gigabytes per second (you can, for example, download a movie in less than a minute).

The broadband coverage report of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation offers data, by municipality, on access to 4G and 5G technology. Keep in mind that a home (which is the percentage offered by the document) has 4G coverage if it is in the coverage area of at least one mobile network upgraded to 4G (same with 5G).

Waiting

Well, in Córdoba the real 5G is waiting, or at least it was in 2021, the year to which the data dates back. It is true that in this 2022 much progress has been made in this regardmore than in all previous years, so the percentage of Cordovans with access to that 5G is surely already higher.

Only 16 municipalities out of 75 that make up the Province have homes with access to 5Gand the percentage of households is not something to write home about either. Where there is more coverage is in Lucena (92.31% of households) and in Pedro Abad (91.88%). The other most outstanding percentages are those of Castro del Río (83.79%), the capital (79.49%) and Belalcázar (76.54%). These five and 11 more (Aguilar de la Frontera, Baena, Belmez, Cabra, Fuente Palmera, Montilla, Nueva Carteya, Palma del Río, Pozoblanco, Priego de Córdoba and Puente Genil), have access to 5G in a more or less outstanding percentage. of their homes, in the rest of the localities, is zero. In other words, in 59 municipalities in the province, at least last year, 5G did not exist. The 4G, yes, reaches practically 100% of homes in the province, with exceptions such as Los Blázquez.
