It wasn’t meant to be: For the women of FC Bayern Munich, the Champions League season is over after a 2-2 (1-0) draw against Paris Saint Germain. In a dramatic game, two leads were not enough for Bayern to win and advance.
After a rollercoaster of emotions, FC Bayern Munich’s women were eliminated from the Champions League. A 2:2 (1:0) was not enough for coach Alexander Straus’ team to advance, also because Ajax Amsterdam defeated AS Roma 2:1 in the parallel game. This means that Ajax will move into the quarter-finals of the premier class as group winners and Paris.
Damnjanovic’s stoppage-time goal doesn’t count
In the seventh minute of added time, which was supposed to only last six minutes, the Bayern fans’ emotions were once again thrown into disarray. Substitute Jovana Damnjanovic had just scored to make it 3-2 – with this result the Bayern women would have qualified for the round of the last eight teams. But Damnjanovic was offside – the goal didn’t count. A few seconds later the final whistle sounded. Deeply disappointed Bayern women were eliminated.
Giuklia Gwinn (36th) and Sydney Lohmann (75th) had previously given Munich the lead twice. But the French were able to equalize twice and thus had the better and happier ending for themselves.
Giulia Gwinn puts FCB in the lead
But first things first: The guests from France took control of the game at the beginning and let the ball and opponents run well. But the Munich team was prepared for it and didn’t allow any significant chances. At first there was little offensive for Bayern because all the players were deep and the way forward was correspondingly long.
The can opener was a chance from Lea Schüller, who was denied by Constance Picaud in the Paris goal after Pernille Harder’s cross pass (34′). The reigning German champions took advantage of the subsequent corner: Giulia Gwinn headed in after Glódis Viggósdóttir gave her the lead (36′).
PSG strikes back ice cold twice
It was clear: PSG had to come now if they didn’t want to be dependent on the result in Amsterdam. Goalkeeper Maria Luisa Grohs promptly had to save against Grace Geyoro (53′). In the 73rd minute, however, the French equalized: after a long ball, Grohs made the wrong decision by not responding to a header back pass. Tabitha Chawinga splashed in between, played around Grohs and scored to make it 1-1.
Now things got wild: after a cross from Klara Bühl, Sydney Lohmann was there with her head (75′). Bayern were leading 2-1 again and the fans were hoping that they would keep the lead over time. But Paris didn’t give up. In the 84th minute, a Bayern player saved on the line after a mistake by Grohs. Four minutes later it was 2-2: Bayern were unable to clear a corner. Sandy Baltimore was allowed to shoot from 14 meters to the right. Georgia Stanway finally deflected the ball, which had not been shot sharply, into her own goal (88th).
Things got dramatic again in stoppage time, but it was no longer enough for the FCB women, who had thrown everything forward. They now have to concentrate on the Bundesliga and the DFB Cup.
