Purchase on account is still the most popular payment method for online shopping in Germany – albeit with a downward trend. While 30.4 percent of all online purchases were still paid by invoice in 2020, the proportion fell to 28.3 percent in 2021, as the Cologne-based retail research institute EHI reported on Wednesday in its study “Online Payment 2022”.
Paying with the online payment service PayPal was almost as popular among consumers. He was able to increase his market share from 24.9 to 28.2 percent. According to the EHI study, the strong upswing in Paypal is due to a change in payment behavior due to the corona pandemic. In the online business that is booming during the pandemic, customers are increasingly using the payment service to pay their bills.
The direct debit procedure was in third place in the popularity ranking of payment methods on the Internet with a turnover share of 17.4 percent – slightly less than in the previous year. Credit cards were used for 11.4 percent of purchases – also somewhat less frequently than in the previous year. All other payment methods such as purchases made in advance, direct transfers or cash on delivery played a subordinate role. (dpa)
