reviewThere was a time when even the less successful films from the Marvel industry still guaranteed an evening of above-average entertainment. But after 33 chapters in the superhero saga (which officially started in 2008 with Iron man) the stretch seems to have gone a bit. The Marvels is, despite the presence of a lot of fresh talent, a completely tasteless stew.
The fact that men have virtually nothing to say here for a change – mainly women were at the helm behind the camera – should of course not provide an extra star in the rating. It does provide the film with a favorable factor. That’s even more unfortunate The Marvels has become such an uninspired mess. Now it mainly symbolizes an entertainment factory in decline, because things have not been going well for Thor, Ant-Man, Black Panther and co. Interest is waning, ticket sales are disappointing (especially considering how expensive these productions covered in visual effects are).
One of the problems of film 33 is that the adventures of the trio of heroes led by Carol Danvers alias Captain Marvel (Oscar winner Brie Larson) hardly makes sense for those who do not also have all previous parts well memorized and the series released on Disney+ WandaVision and Ms. Marvel has seen. Explaining the plot (something involving a destabilized universe, wormholes, and an evil alien race) is pretty much pointless. Bland humor, a lack of tension building and a barely adrenaline-raising spectacle are equally major stumbling blocks.
The wheel must now be reinvented quickly, otherwise owner Disney will see his Marvel empire, including merchandising, hotels and entire theme parks, collapse like a house of cards.
