One killed in Israeli attack on occupied West Bank | Abroad

The Israeli army carried out airstrikes on Jenin in the occupied West Bank on Sunday night. The target, according to the army, was a command center for militant fighters. The Palestinian Ministry of Health said one person was killed and one injured in the attack.

According to the Israeli army, the stricken building served as a command center for fighters of the Jenin Brigades, an armed unit made up of fighters from various militant groups. Weapons and explosives would also be stored there. An aerial photo provided by the Israeli army shows the center to be located between two schools and a medical center.

Last month, Israel also killed three militant gunmen near Jenin in the first drone attack on the West Bank since 2006. Israel declined to specify whether a drone was involved in Monday’s attack.

Violence increased

In recent times, violence has increased throughout the region. In June, Jewish settlers attacked Palestinian towns in retaliation for an attack by the Palestinian Hamas movement the day before. The settlers set fire to cars and buildings. According to Palestinian authorities, a Palestinian was also shot dead.

The unrest followed the funerals of four Israelis. They were shot dead by Palestinians at a gas station and restaurant in the West Bank. Hamas called the shooting a response to a major Israeli army operation in Jenin. According to local authorities, seven Palestinians were killed there, including a 15-year-old girl.

Israel has occupied the West Bank since 1967. In the area, hundreds of thousands of so-called settlers live in settlements that are illegal under international law.
