Once again a badger sett is causing problems on the track

A new badger sett has been discovered under the railway between Boxtel and Liempde. The castle causes problems for train traffic between Tilburg and Eindhoven. At least until Friday, there will be far fewer trains on that route.

Due to the tunnels that the badgers dig under the track, there is a risk of subsidence of the track, ProRail said. The rail manager has therefore decided that trains that are running on the route may not travel faster than forty kilometers per hour.

Eleven different entrances under the track have currently been counted. ProRail takes several castles into account.

At least until Friday, there will be one fewer intercity train per hour between Tilburg and Eindhoven. There are also no sprinters on the route. Travelers are advised to check the travel planner before departure.

Earlier also problems because of the tie
Earlier this year, badgers caused problems on the railways near Esch and also at Berghem and Geffen. ProRail indicates that it has so far identified forty locations with badger setts. The castle between Boxtel and Liempde was not yet included. This place came into the picture two weeks ago.

Exemption requested
To remove a badger sett, permission is required from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO). The badger is a protected animal. ProRail applied for this exemption on December 4 and the rail manager indicates that it is currently in good consultation with the RVO about the approach to the castle.

When the RVO gives permission, according to ProRail, measures are first taken to ensure that the badger leaves on its own, the so-called discouragement policy. To then ensure that the animal does not return. Then, once the tie has disappeared, the track slope is repaired so that the trains can run at full speed again.
