In the 1970s there was a strong storm that caused a lot of damage in the forest. Tens of thousands of trees did not survive. Staatsbosbeheer decided to fence the site and let Drenthe heath sheep graze there. Since then this moor has been known as the Sheep Park† In the middle is the megalithic artwork Ode to the sun by Rob Schreefel.
