Inspired by the story of the Foo Fighters’ recent horror comedy feature film Studio 666, vocalist and guitarist Dave Grohl wrote music for an entire EP. DREAM WIDOW contains eight tracks, was released on March 25, 2022 and thus at a thematically very bad and tragic time: Hours later that day, Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins was found lifeless in a hotel room in Bogotá and died there. Investigations into the cause of death continue. Read our Hawkins obituary here.
In the film, the rock band around Grohl spends time in a creepy house to look for inspiration for their new album and to record the record MEDICINE AT MIDNIGHT. In the basement of the building, the singer found a demo tape from a deceased metal band called Dream Widow, along with several objects that refer to Satanism. It happened as it had to happen: he listened to the tape, whereupon he became possessed by the spirit of the band’s dead frontman and “all hell broke loose,” Grohl says of the subsequent events in the film.
The track “March of the Insane”, which was heard on the demo tape, was released as a single in February. It was recorded by the Foo Fighters, they released the song under the pseudonym Dream Widow. After recording March of the Insane, Grohl had the idea “to make a whole Dream Widow album straight away, which would be their missing record, which they recorded before they were murdered.” The result of this work can now be heard.
The ex-Nirvana drummer already proved that he has a knack for metal in 2004 with his album PROBOT. He recorded the instrumentals for the record himself, for the vocals he hired various metal band singers who rounded off his work.
“Dream Widow” was only released digitally for the time being, the physical release was planned for the end of the year. All eight songs are available with visualizer on YouTube.
