On the big stage for the first time: FCB women in the Allianz Arena

The FC Bayern women’s soccer team will appear on the big stage for the first time in Munich: on March 22nd they will be playing the quarter-finals of the Champions League against top French team Paris St. Germain in the Allianz Arena.

“We are very pleased with this milestone in the more than 50-year history of our women’s football department.” FCB CEO Oliver Kahn.

Coach Jens Scheuer’s team is given “the stage it deserves. I hope that the general conditions will allow for a football festival where many Bayern fans will support our women in the Allianz Arena,” said Kahn.

Corona: 10,000 fans are currently allowed

The FCB women usually play their home games on the Bayern campus. Due to the corona pandemic, the government is currently allowing 10,000 fans in the 75,000-seat Allianz Arena. But by March 22, this number could increase further if the pandemic and political regulations allow it.

Five years ago, the Bayern women played against PSG in the quarter-finals of the premier class. At that time, 7,300 spectators watched the game in the Grünwalder Stadium.

International role models: Juventus and Atlético

There are international role models for FC Bayern’s project. In 2019, the women’s teams from Atlético Madrid and FC Barcelona competed in the men’s home ground, the Estadio Metropolitano, and set a world record: over 60,000 fans watched the game back then.

A short time later, the women’s team of Juventus played against Fiorentina also in the stadium of their male clubmates and managed to fill the stadium with over 40,000 spectators.
