For Germans in the border area it has been on the agenda for a year now, Groningers are sometimes surprised by it: the flower market (officially the annual flower market) on Good Friday in the center of Groningen. It’s that time again on Friday.
The Flower Year Market in Groningen is the largest flower and plant market in the Northern Netherlands. More than a hundred market vendors offer their flowers and plants on the Grote Markt and the Vismarkt, the Oude Ebbingestraat, Guldenstraat, Brugstraat and the Akerkhof.
Fresh cut flowers and (house) plants, seed, flower bulbs, garden tools and accessories are offered at the flower market. Once again this year there is a flower depot on the Grote Markt, where you can store purchased plants between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., so that you have your hands free to go shopping or find a terrace.
And… switch the translation program on your phone to German or put ‘What and how in German’ in your pocket before you go into town. You’re going to need it.
Traffic to and from the flower market
Normally, the organization of the market advises everyone to come by public transport as much as possible. This time it is possible that there will be a strike in public transport on Friday 7 April. It will only be known shortly in advance whether the strikes will actually take place. So check the websites of Qbuzz and Arriva for current information.
