On Dreamers, Lockheart doesn’t choose hunted or provoked, but flowery and warm ★★★★☆

The British Edition Records has grown into one of the better contemporary jazz labels in recent years. While it somewhat ignores the current hip London scene around saxophonists Shabaka Hutchings and Nubya Garcia, it offers plenty of space for British jazz names that have been around for a while, but are still innovating, such as saxophonist Mark Lockheart. In the eighties he was already active in the famous Loose Tubes, after which he introduced jazz to a more experimental rock audience with Polar Bear.

Lockheart has been in the spotlight in recent years as an accompanist with several albums for the Edition label. Be first newest and best album dreamers he sought collaboration with another regular Edition value, keyboardist Elliot Galvin. He mainly plays electrically on this album. His widely fanned synth patterns provide harmonically beautiful combinations with Lockheart’s (tenor) sax.

on dreamers no rushed or exasperated jazz, but flowery and often warm compositions. Once in a while Lockheart picks up the soprano sax and then the music refers to that of the old busy Weather Report, but mostly it’s original, nicely done melodies that keep the attention.
