Sjaak Koote has for the fourth episode of Cycling in Drenthe planned a trip to Overijssel. This Wiedenroute starts from Havelte and leads via the Overcingel estate, Nijeveen and Kolderveen to the Overijssel provincial border.
There Sjaak dives into the Rietlanden, the very water-rich area in the head of Overijssel. On one of the bridges he meets forester Hester Wolters of Natuurmonumenten, who explains what kind of area it is.
“It’s very big, with all the lakes. Peat used to be extracted here, and it was called ‘ribs’ placed on laying fields. So then you have those holes with laying fields next to it, and that is how it came about,” says Sjaak about the Lakes.
