In the first of a total of six episodes of Cycling in Drenthe Sjaak’s route runs along and through the Bargerveen.
Sjaak starts at the sheepfold at Weiteveen. From there he cycles through the ancient Oostersebos near Schoonebeek and follows the Amsterdamscheveld, the villages of Erica and Klazienaveen and the new Koning Willem-Alexander canal.
Towards the German border, the route continues via Schöninghsdorf along the back of the ancient peat bog, where peat is still extracted. Sjaak wonders whether he is cycling on the cycle path on the edge of the Bargerveen in Germany, or still in the Netherlands.
