In January, Borussia Mönchengladbach had to react at short notice to Yann Sommer’s move to FC Bayern and has therefore secured the services of Jonas Omlin. The 29-year-old wants to fill in the big footsteps of the foals and is looking forward to meeting his predecessor.
“We’re happy because we’ve never played against each other. I exchanged voice memos with him this week,” revealed the Swiss in an interview with “Sport1” with a view to the home game against Bayern next Saturday (3:30 p.m ).
Although he has only been playing for Borussia for a few weeks, Omlin says he feels well prepared for the top game. That is also due to coach Daniel Farke.
“He showed me very early on with videos what he expected from me and how I should replace Yann’s role. I’m trying to do that now,” said the new number one.
The move to Gladbach was less pleasant for him because of the stalemate in the summer negotiations, Omlin revealed.
Omlin: That’s why I chose Gladbach
“It was a stressful time. Nevertheless, I knew: If Borussia and Bayern can agree on Yann’s move, I really want to go to Gladbach in the Bundesliga. Then it went back and forth, with cancellations and commitments. I’ve never had anything like that a transfer,” he explained. Now he is “very happy that it worked”.
The fact that the four-time national player chose Gladbach was mainly due to the reputation there as a Swiss oasis. “Mönchengladbach and Switzerland – it somehow fits! I’ve always followed my teammates from the national team, whether Yann Sommer, Nico Elvedi, Breel Embolo or Denis Zakaria. They all raved about it,” said the keeper.
Now Omlin can certainly imagine shaping an era on the Lower Rhine – similar to what compatriot Sommer has done in the last eight years. For him, this also includes a title with Borussia. “We’re working on ensuring that we have experiences like this again at some point. I want to help ensure that we get the glory days back. A title with Gladbach is certainly possible.”
