In a little over a month, the Beijing Olympics begin. Some defending champions want to win the gold medal again. However, one of them will be missing.
Olympic speed skating champion Kjeld Nuis missed the ticket for the winter games in Beijing over 1000 meters. The 32-year-old, who suffered from Corona last year, only finished fourth at the Dutch qualifying tournament in Heerenveen. The Olympic starting places went to Thomas Krol, World Champion Kai Verbij and Hein Otterspeer.
There was also a surprise for the women over 1500 m: Jorien ter Mors, 2014 Olympic champion, only came in 13th. Ter Mors, who won gold on this route in 2018, had already failed to qualify for over 1000 m. The tickets went to European champion Antoinette de Jong ahead of Olympic champion Ireen Wüst and mass start world champion Marijke Groenewoud.
