Montpellier (AP) – Eleven days after his knockout round at the Australian Open, tennis Olympic champion Alexander Zverev celebrated another victory on the ATP tour.
The 24-year-old won his round of 16 match against American Mackenzie McDonald at the ATP tournament in Montpellier 6: 2, 7: 6 (7: 5). After 1:19 hours the favorite had reached the next round. In the quarterfinals, number 1 seeded Zverev meets Frenchman Adrian Mannarino. The hard court tournament in southern France is endowed with 490,990 euros.
Zverev has good memories of Montpellier: the Hamburger had won both singles and doubles there with his brother Mischa five years ago. At the Australian Open he had already failed in the round of 16 against Canadian Denis Shapovalov. “I was under a lot of pressure in Australia. Everyone kept saying that I could become number one in the world and I was disappointed with my performance,” said the Olympic champion, who competed individually in Montpellier and together with Brazilian Marcelo Melo compete in doubles.
