Oslo (dpa) – The three-time biathlon Olympic champion Marte Olsbu Röiseland is happy about the new job of her husband Sverre, who will be the new discipline trainer of the German women skiers from May 1st.
“I’m just very proud of Sverre that he gets such an opportunity,” said the 31-year-old Norwegian. Her husband, who is the same age, will take over the post at the German Ski Association in May and, together with women’s trainer Kristian Mehringer, will look after the team until the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy.
“Coming to such a big biathlon nation is just amazing and I’m really happy for Sverre. I think he deserves it,” said Marte Olsbu Röiseland. Even the eleven-time world champion has not yet decided whether she will continue her career. Last winter she won the overall World Cup for the first time and, with a total of 14 World Championships and seven Olympic medals, is one of the outstanding athletes of recent years.
Sverre Olsbu Röiseland coached his wife in the past and was also active as a coach for young Norwegian biathlon athletes. His contract was not renewed after five years this summer. Most recently, he worked for the women’s B team. At DSV he follows Florian Steirer.
“It’s a challenge and something new that will help me become an even better coach and gain new experiences,” Sverre Olsbu Röiseland told the Norwegian daily Verdens Gang, adding: “Of course it’s great to be asked to work in one of the big nations in biathlon.”
