Olympic champion Matthias Mayer triggers police action

This weekend the legendary ski races on the Streif are taking place in Kitzbühel. But before that there was a scandal in a hotel.

Olympic ski champion Matthias Mayer (Austria) triggered a police operation in Kitzbühel on Thursday. The 33-year-old, who has now ended his career and advises the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV), attracted unpleasant attention in the team hotel. Hotel employees then called the police, who temporarily arrested Mayer.

A police spokesman confirmed that a person had “rioted” in a hotel and was subsequently arrested. He did not say who it was. The ÖSV, however, confirmed Mayer’s involvement in a scandal.

“Problems not yet overcome”

“Today we had to note with regret that Matthias Mayer has not yet overcome the health problems with which he has been struggling for a long time. As the Ski Austria family, we, together with all athletes, colleagues and partners, have always supported him.” said the ÖSV in a statement.

“We wish Matthias all the best and hope that he can return to his passion, skiing, as soon as possible. After consulting with his family, we ask for their respect and understanding that we cannot provide any further information,” it continued Explanation.

Matthias Mayer is one of the most successful ski racers in Austrian history, winning gold medals at three Olympic Games and also celebrating several World Cup victories. At the end of 2022, he surprisingly announced his retirement in the middle of the season.

He now works for the ÖSV as an advisor to speed drivers and is also involved in promoting young talent.
