As an Olympic champion and world champion, Malaika Mihambo was actually the clear favorite for the European Championships. But the German has a training backlog after Corona.

Title favorite Malaika Mihambo has to worry about her start at the European Athletics Championships in Munich after a corona infection. The 28-year-old long jump world champion contracted the virus after the World Cup in Eugene, her management announced on Tuesday.

“It was a mild course, but I felt tired and listless and didn’t train for ten days,” said Mihambo. “Unfortunately, the quarantine and the symptoms made optimal preparation for the competition impossible.”

Whether she can compete at the European Championships will be decided over the next week, the message said. The women’s long jump qualification is scheduled for next Tuesday in the European Championship schedule. The final will be held on August 18th.
