Marcell Jacobs is the fastest man in Europe.
The Olympic champion from Italy won gold at the European Championships in Munich with a championship record of 9.95 seconds over the 100 m and prevailed against the British title defender Zharnel Hughes (9.99). Bronze went to his compatriot Jeremiah Azu (10.13).
Jacobs, who had to miss the semi-finals at the World Championships in Eugene due to muscle problems, had already made the best impression in the semi-finals. In 1994, Brit Linford Christie was the last European to date to have won European Championship gold after his Olympic triumph.
The DLV trio Owen Ansah, Lucas Ansah-Peprah (both Hamburg) and Julian Wagner (Erfurt) were eliminated in the semifinals. Most recently, Lucas Jakubczyk (Berlin) was a German in a European Championship final over 100 m in Zurich in 2014.
