Olympic champion Jacobs has to be content with EM silver

100m Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs had to settle for the silver medal at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Istanbul.

The defending champion was defeated by his compatriot Samuele Cecccarelli in the 60m final on Saturday, the two Italians achieved a double victory in 6.48 and 6.50 seconds. Bronze went to Sweden’s Henrik Larsson (6.53).

European indoor record holder Jacobs hadn’t posted any absolute top times this season and had to admit defeat to his compatriot Cecccarelli at the Italian indoor championships. After the competition, the favorite limped down the track, apparently he had already sustained an injury in the semifinals.

The German starters Robin Ganter (Mannheim) and Yannick Wolf (Munich) were eliminated in the semi-finals. Alexandra Burghardt, the best German, finished seventh in the 60m final on Friday. Victory went to indoor world champion Mujinga Kambundji from Switzerland.
