Olympic champion Chloe Kim takes sabbatical: ‘For my mental health’ | Other sports

American snowboarder Chloe Kim has announced that she will not be competing next season. The two-time Olympic champion is taking a sabbatical due to her mental health. In an interview on the internet channel Cheddar she said she needed a total ‘reset’ and not a new season.

Kim is not saying goodbye to the sport. She wants to go again for a third consecutive gold medal in the halfpipe at the 2026 Winter Olympics, in Cortina d’Ampezzo.

The American champion has been struggling with concerns about her mental health for some time. After her first snowboard title at the 2018 Games in Pyeongchang, at just 17 years old, she struggled with the consequences of her fame.

She considered ending her career, but took a 22-month hiatus instead. In 2021 she started snowboarding again. In February this year, she again achieved success with her second Olympic victory at the Winter Games in Beijing.
