Olympic application concept main topic at the DOSB

President Thomas Weikert is expecting a clear signal for the next phase of an Olympic bid at the general meeting of the German Olympic Sports Confederation.

To do this, the DOSB members must agree to the so-called “Frankfurt Declaration” on Saturday. “We are confident that the delegates will consider the social guidelines to be correct and expedient and will give the DOSB the task of creating an application concept that meets the expectations of many people and also contains one or two innovative ideas,” Weikert told the German press -Agency.

The DOSB does not want to enter the race with one city, as with previous Olympic projects, all of which have failed since the 1972 Summer Games in Munich, but with several. “The regulations of the International Olympic Committee allow applications from several cities, an entire country or several nations,” explained Weikert. “Ultimately, it’s about a concept being convincing and coherent in all areas of society.”

The DOSB recently explored at dialogue forums how a new attempt at the Olympics could be received by the population. “The main goal of the dialogue process this year was to gain an initial, as representative as possible impression of what the mood in the country is regarding a renewed application,” said Weikert.

Before creating a concept, they wanted to determine what was important to people, what expectations they would have of an application and what their arguments were against the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Germany. “We have achieved these goals,” said the 62-year-old lawyer.

“If the general meeting of the DOSB agrees to the social framework conditions, we will begin developing an application concept in 2024 that meets these expectations,” Weikert announced.
