6 game days before the end of the playoffs
James Rodríguez is leaving Olympiacos Piraeus around ten weeks before the end of his contract. As the Greek record champions and the 31-year-old playmaker announced, the contract was terminated by mutual agreement. Previously, the Colombian reporter pipe sierra reports that the parties could not agree on further cooperation, although there was an option to extend it.
With a market value of €9m, James is now the most valuable non-club player ahead of former Real team-mate Isco (€5m). Olympiakos signed the former Bayern pro last September from Qatar’s Al-Rayyan SC. Since then, James has contributed five goals and six assists in 23 competitive games, but he has not continued his former top form. In the championship playoffs that have been running since mid-March, the Colombian international has not even played more than 90 minutes. With six games remaining, holders Olympiakos are six points adrift of leaders Panathinaikos.
Kruse, James & Co.: Valuable & prominent clubless professionals
Where James is going now is still open. There have been rumors in recent weeks in Turkey (Galatasaray, Besiktas) and Brazil. In the North American MLS, the transfer window is open until April 24th. James tweeted: “I want to thank everyone for the time we’ve had together. Even though we are going our separate ways, I feel that I will always be a member and welcome in the family of the great port city of Piraeus. I wish Olympiakos all the best and every success for the future.”
OLYMPIACOS FC and @jamesdrodriguez have decided to terminate their cooperation. James will always be part of our club and a member of the “red-and-white” family.
