Yanqing (AP) – The German ski racer Lena Dürr is on course for gold after the first run in the slalom at the Winter Olympics in China.
After 35 starters, the 30-year-old led by a margin of 0.03 seconds over Michelle Gisin from Switzerland and 0.12 seconds over Sara Hector from Sweden, who became Olympic champion in giant slalom on Monday. Fourth-placed Andreja Slokar of Slovenia was 0.47 seconds back.
“It was a dream to drive. It was just a pleasure. I’m trying not to think too much now and absorb that and keep the feeling for the second,” said Dürr, who started the race with the hoped-for number one .
US superstar Mikaela Shiffrin, on the other hand, experienced the next debacle. After her early exit in the giant slalom, she also made a mistake in the first run of the slalom and was already out after a few goals. “It’s very unusual for you,” Dürr commented on the early exit.
