The dethroned Olympic curling champion USA also missed bronze at the Winter Games in Beijing.
The Pyeongchang gold medalist, who lost to Great Britain in the semi-finals (4-8), lost Friday’s small final to Canada 5-8. The Canadians had won gold in 2006, 2010 and 2014, but went away empty-handed in 2018.
The Olympic victory is at stake on Saturday (7:05 a.m. CET/2:05 p.m. OZ) in the “Ice Cube”. The Brits meet world champion Sweden in the final and can win their second gold. The only one they had secured so far was in 1924 at the Olympic premiere in Chamonix/France.
There is also a new Olympic champion for women. Defending champion Sweden surprisingly failed in the semifinals with 11:12 after an extra end against Great Britain. The Swedes only forced the “overtime” with a 3-0 win in the tenth end.
World champion Switzerland also did not make it into the final, the preliminary round winner lost to Japan 6:8. The Swiss had only suffered one defeat in the group stage. The teams from Great Britain and Japan only made it into the semi-finals on the last day of the group match.
