To enter orbit, what is a dental implant? “Screw-shaped titanium sanitary piece that supplants the root of the lost tooth.” Its composition, titanium, is the same material that is used in different body surgeries. There are implants made of another material, zirconium, it is also an extremely hard metal, but its biocompatibility is less.

Planning

The first in the first step, we request a panoramic X-ray. With this x-ray we are going to see how the mouth is in its entirety: the bone and its quality, the dental elements, its position, if there is any infection, the advance of caries, the position of the nerve ducts, anatomical repairs, among others. other things. According to the needs and possibilities of each patient, we design how to restore the mouth.

start of treatment

In this half-hour shift, we take intra and extra oral photos and take impressions to obtain plaster models of the mouth for proper study. We give the pre-surgical medication and schedule the date and time of the surgery.

Surgery

Previously, to place the implants, the gum was cut and separated from the bone, generating a flap, and with the bone exposed, bone in sight, the implant placement was performed. Many years ago the placement of implants evolved. In our clinic, we opt for implant placement with a minimally invasive technique.

It consists of making a small hole in the gum and working from there.
Drills with different diameters are passed over the bone where we want to place the implant. Once we reach the expected length and diameter, we screw the implant slowly. We remove the implant holder and place a cover. Surgeries have an average time of one hour. By not separating the gum from the bone, the patient has a pain-free postoperative period and surgical times are shorter.

We give the patient in writing all the recommendations and care that he has to have. The most important is to take the antibiotic on time to avoid infections and relative rest for four days, that is, stay calm at home.

postoperative

After the surgery we wait 3 months for the implant to join the bone. During that time we monitor the patient, first weekly and then monthly. We control patients who come from far away online.

prosthetic stage

Depending on what we have planned, it will vary. But broadly we have two types of treatment: fixed crowns on implants, partially removable prostheses.

Fixed crowns on implants are porcelain crowns that remain in the mouth as if they were the patient’s own teeth. Porcelain does not change in color, shape or size over time.

The partially removable prosthesis is a prosthesis that is attached to the implants by a pressure system, preventing it from moving. Its material is acrylic, at approximately 20 years we must renew it.
