The NHL has flown the Detroit Red Wings, Minnesota Wild, Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs to Europe. This year, the venue for the Global Series is Stockholm’s Avicii Arena.
In Thursday’s Eurostart, the Senators and Red Wings met. Seen behind the Senators bench Daniel Alfredsson, who normally works in the organization in player development tasks.
– I’m really excited to be able to participate in the action, he commented below the match on the NHL’s website.
– These are big matches for both teams.
The Senators seemed to be excited by the club icon’s court presence, as the Red Wings net stretched three times in the opening set. Brady Tkachuk hit twice Jake Sanderson once.
Senators Josh Norris put the puck in for the fourth time right at the beginning of the second period by James Reimer behind. The match seemed to be over – but it wasn’t.
In the second period, the Red Wings started hitting pucks Joonas Korpisalo past. The Senators’ four-goal lead disappeared in less than eight minutes.
– It was known that Detroit is a fiery gang, but that shouldn’t happen, Korpisalo commented on V-sport.
– The most important thing is that we won the match.
A special match got a special solution. Tim Stützle tapped the high bounced puck into the net in nesting style with two seconds left in overtime.
Olli Määttä played a strong role in the kir phase: 0+2 and +3. In the final set, he was able to bomb of one timer quite freely, but Korpisalo caught the puck.
Korpisalo recorded 37 saves. Määtä got more than 20 minutes of playing time. Roby Järventie remained in a minor role in the Senators’ four.
Playoff spots aren’t won or lost in mid-November, but the two-point pot was really valuable for the Senators – especially when it came from a team playing on the playoff line in the same division.
The Senators are still the jumbo of the Atlantic division: 14 games, 14 points.
