For 4 million from Bruges to Werder
Werder Bremen’s new signing Olivier Deman only landed on the Weser shortly before the transfer deadline due to tough talks between the green-whites and his previous employer Cercle Bruges. “The negotiations between the two clubs were not that easy. At the beginning I had no doubts, but then it dragged on. As a player, you then think about what will happen. But I always had faith that it would work out. My advisors were always in contact with Werder,” said the left winger in a “Picture“-Interview.
4 million euro purchase Deman, whose market value was recently increased from 3 million to 4.5 million euros, followed his gut feeling before the transfer. “From the first moment I spoke to Clemens (Fritz, head of licensing department; editor), the coach (Ole Werner; editor) and Johannes (Jahns, squad planner; editor), I had a very good feeling. “They worked very, very hard to bring me here very early on,” said the 23-year-old. So far – before this matchday – Deman has played four times for 304 minutes for his new club Werder, scoring two goals.
Although he was in the starting line-up four times – including the home game against Union Berlin – Deman would not yet feel like a regular starter. “Even at my former club, where I always played, I never had the feeling that I had secured my place. Because when you think you’re untouchable, you stop developing as a player. I like the pressure and if I don’t train well I think I might not play. That’s how I try to improve,” Deman explained.

The stamp as the most expensive summer entry, which was presented on August 31st, is not a pressure for him, but “more of an extra motivation”. The Antwerp native celebrated with the Belgian national team in the 3-0 win against Estonia in the European Championship qualification on June 20th. A huge story for Deman. “I had to pinch my arm to believe it,” he said in another interview on “La Dernière Heure“. “I was speechless when I saw Lukaku, Courtois and the others. Lukaku welcomed me well. He even talked to me about my appearance at Cercle Brugge. I had no idea he was aware of it.”
