Oliver Stone on “Barbie”: “Ryan Gosling wasted his time”

The director finds Greta Gerwig’s satirical comedy infantile and Gosling should make more serious films.

In an interview, US director Oliver Stone (“Platoon”, “Alexander”) spoke out against Canadian actor Ryan Gosling, whose work on Greta Gerwig’s satirical comedy “Barbie” and against other Hollywood productions – “John Wick” and “Fast & Furious” – handed out.

“He should make more serious films”

The 77-year-old filmmaker was asked by “City AM” about his opinion of the “Barbie” film and Stone then made it clear that the work would contribute to the “infantilization of Hollywood”. He particularly criticized Gosling, who plays Ken, for his choice of film: “Ryan Gosling is wasting his time doing this shit for money. He should do more serious films.”

Fell asleep during “John Wick” 778 times

There was probably no stopping Oliver Stone after that. He then continued to complain: “Now it’s all about fantasy, fantasy, fantasy – including all the war films: fantasy, fantasy. Even the ‘Fast and Furious’ movies that I used to like have become like Marvel movies. I mean, how many crashes can you want to see?”

He also didn’t have much interest in the actioner “John Wick”. He turned on a film from the series during a flight and “fell asleep about 778 times.” And further: “I kept waking up and having to watch him [Keanu Reeves als John Wick] killed even more people. It’s as if the world has fallen into illogicality.”

As early as June 2023, Stone talked about his apparently very impactful “John Wick” experience: “I saw ‘John Wick 4’ on the plane. What a volume. I think the film is incredibly disgusting. Disgusting.”
