Oliver Helander broke into the ranks of true spear legends

Helander is now the fourth best in Finland on the all-time list.

Oliver Helander 89.83 is the fourth longest arc on Finland’s all-time list with the current spear model.

– A little went upstairs. Already in the warm-up, it felt like a plant tone should be thrown away. The run was a bit of a whistle before the cross steps. I dared to press all in, Helander said after his arc.

Aki Parviainen SE is 93.09, Tero Pitkämäki reached 91.53 and Seppo Räty 90.60.

Behind Helander was, among others, the European champion Antti Ruuskanen (88.98).

– It feels pretty damn good. Quite a few tough throwers were left behind, Helander said, also referring to Tuesday’s competition, where he stabbed, among other things, an Olympic winner Neeraj Chopran and World Cup gold medalist Anderson Petersin.

Helander’s old record of 88.02 was from 2018. Since then, he has experienced a plethora of health problems.

Cortisone was put in an old shoulder grief that came to Raseborg a few years ago.

– The charge went to the second throw. That’s why I missed the last two laps on Tuesday. The shoulder is in good condition. Let’s continue in the same way, so if it doesn’t come 90 meters from there.

On Tuesday, he would have owned a Ford Mustang if the winning result had been better than Parviainen’s SE.

– It should have been the winds of the Doha Diamond League, so maybe it would have gone then.

The Paavo Nurmi Games in their current form have been held for ten years. Since 2014, the men’s spear race has been international.

Before Helander, only Tero Pitkämäki has been able to win the Finns in Turku Sports Park. He won 85.89 and 89.09 in 2014–15.

Helander’s 89.93 is the world statistic for this season’s triple score. Only Peters (93.07) and the Czech Republic are above Jakub Vadljech (90.88).

Opening of the season

Chopra was second with a record of 89.30 on Tuesday and Peters third with 86.60.

Lassi Etelätalo was the second best Finn in the seventh 82.63.

– Quite OK. Good result for the start race. There was a side effect in April-May, so that’s why I only opened my season now. No throw bothered throwing. It may be that tomorrow feels, Etelätalo commented.

He is a salet player inside the Eugene World Championships with his ranking points, even though he has not made the World Championship result limit of 85 meters.

– In Eugene you should first figure out the qualifiers, then fight for the medals.

Kick

Toni Kuusela got a shot from Helander’s throw. Tomi Natri / All Over Press

Toni Kuusela was eighth in the season at 80.35 on Tuesday.

– Forward. It has a lot of potential. Making legs is better, but the outrigger is like a cow tail. Does not give pressure to hit the back. A little nervous when it doesn’t command, Kuusela rotted.

He has no trouble on his shoulder, elbow or support leg. They are the most critical places for a javelin thrower.

– That’s amazing, Kuusela laughed.

The left hand was in the package instead. It was injured last week in Espoo.

– Slightly crooked. Left hand – it doesn’t matter.

Kuusela does not have a World Cup limit, and the current ranking points are not enough behind the rake. He will be railing next week in Orimattila and Oulu on a border hunt.

– The situation is similar to a year ago.

At that time, Pohjalainen slammed 85 meters in the winds of Orimattila and reached the Tokyo Games.

Helander’s throw kicked the other Finns.

– It was a hell of a great looking throw. Saw in the warm-up that he is in shock. Oliver then also had a success in the race, Etelätalo said.

– Give yourself a kick. Nice but when others succeed. Bring yourself to the feeling that I won’t lose at least ten meters, Kuusela said.
