Oliebollen baker Richard: ‘Recipe mainly consists of love and attention’

Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside and certainly not too greasy. The oliebollen from Richard Voets from Tilburg are the tastiest in Brabant. The oliebollen baker immediately has an anniversary by winning the inspection of oliebollentestonline.nl. Richard will receive the title for the fifth time this year.

A big nine is on the certificate in Richard’s oliebollen stall in the Heyhoef shopping center in Tilburg. “I’m really proud. It was very exciting when the results were announced, but luckily the champagne bottle could be opened afterwards. Alcohol-free because I never drink at this time of the year,” says the oliebollen baker.

“This is the icing on the cake, but I think the recognition from the customers is even more important.”

In 2018, 2019, 2020 and last year, Richard also baked the best oliebollen in our province. In 2021 he was dethroned by a colleague in Breda. “Of course I hope to win ten times, but that’s not up to me. This is the icing on the cake, but I think the recognition from the customers is even more important.”

Over the years, his award-winning oliebollen have not only been in great demand in the Reeshof. Even customers from Den Bosch and Eindhoven come especially to the stall in Tilburg to taste Richard’s baked goods. He bakes thousands of them every day between Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

“I still eat four of them a day, basically I’m just addicted to those things.”

The secret of Richard’s success lies in a small room in his stall. This is where the fittings are made, behind a closed door of course. “Oliebollen are a natural product that requires careful work. For example, flour sometimes contains more water than other times. You have to take all that into account. I won’t reveal anything else, my recipe consists mainly of love and attention.”

He continues: “Do I ever have enough? Never, I even dream of oliebollen. I still eat four a day, actually I’m just addicted to those things.”
