OLED TV M3: The world’s first television without cables

For a long time, the appearance of televisions hasn’t changed much. The focus of the manufacturers was rather on the image quality and the systems including the apps. But at CES 2023, LG gave a preview of a whole new TV generation.

With the OLED TV M3, LG has presented its latest television. The special thing about the model is that it works (almost) completely without cables. Instead, the image and audio transmission is realized via the so-called zero-connect technology. The TV only needs a cable for the power supply. This should give more freedom when choosing the location and overall ensure a tidy, elegant look in the room.

Zero Connect Box transmits image and sound wirelessly to LG OLED TV M3

The secret of the LG OLED TV M3 lies in the Zero Connect Box that comes with it. It can be placed at some distance from the television without the transmission quality suffering as a result. The box not only offers the advantage that no cables are visible on the LG OLED TV M3, it also makes it easier to connect other devices. You no longer need access to the back of the TV, which can be attached to the wall, for example.

The box has several HDMI connections, so that various additional devices such as game consoles, set-top boxes or even a soundbar can be connected like on any other TV. The TV connection is also made via the box, which then transmits the image and sound wirelessly to the actual television. According to LG, it has paid attention to transmission with very low latency, so that audio and image are always in sync. A specially developed algorithm should also help to ensure optimal transmission. If desired, users can also readjust themselves by tilting the antenna on the box more towards the television.

TV so far only in one size

LG has only presented the OLED TV M3 at CES in one size – 97 inches. That’s a shame, because the large format isn’t suitable for all households. When asked, the manufacturer did not make any statement to TECHBOOK as to whether the TV would also be launched in other sizes. If the concept is successful, other sizes are very likely.

In addition to the display diagonal of 97 inches, the LG OLED TV M3 also has a 120 Hz panel and 4K resolution. The manufacturer uses its One Wall design with an almost frameless screen and slim case. In addition, the TV and connected devices can be controlled by voice if desired. A wall bracket is included so that the TV can be easily attached to the wall. LG did not give any further details at the fair. So it could well be a while before the OLED TV M3 is commercially available. The price should be in the upper range considering the size of the TV and its new technology.

Also introduced transparent TV

In addition to the LG OLED TV M3, LG presented another television at CES. The special thing about the LG OLED T is the transparent display. The idea is not entirely new. The Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi had already shown such a model in 2020. It was the first of its kind. Now LG has also brought a corresponding device to Las Vegas. The idea behind the LG OLED T is that the screen can be see-through if you wish, so whatever is behind it is visible. This makes it possible to set up the TV in the middle of the room or in front of a window.

Unfortunately, LG’s CEO Frank Lee didn’t give us any further details about the new television at the press conference. The manufacturer does not seem to be planning a near market launch at the moment. Rather, the LG OLED T has been described as a prototype that “shows the direction we are going [LG] want to go”.
