We used to play with it, now it’s really worth money: Some childhood toys like the Game Boy or VHS tapes can bring you a little windfall today.
All those who spent their childhood in the 90s should take a close look at their shelves: Maybe there are not only some childhood memories hidden there, but real treasures!
game boy
The Game Boy including Tetris was available for 149 marks. Today, Game Boys in their original packaging are sometimes offered on portals such as Ebay for over 100 euros – depending on the condition and the sales version. If you have an almost new device with all accessories and maybe even the foils, you can ask for even more. You first have to find such an investment at a bank.
Individual offers of special versions from the early days are offered for up to 65,000 euros on Ebay. The condition of these collectibles is almost always assessed by an independent agency (VGA or WATA) in the USA. Collectors worldwide can send in games there for a fee and thus increase their value. The prices that are then called up by sellers are usually much too high.
VHS Cassettes
Many of us still have them lying around, although most of the time we don’t even have a corresponding recorder anymore: video cassettes. In particular, your old Disney cassettes could be worth a fortune (up to several thousand euros). However, there is a catch: Only special editions are particularly valuable. This includes the editions “Black Diamond Classic‘, ‘Platinum’ or ‘Masterpiece’. And there is another drop of bitterness: this hype has only existed in the USA so far, so this is the English-language version of the Disney films. You can find out exactly what the hype is all about here.
Games for old consoles
The market for retro video games has literally exploded in recent years. This does not only mean the excessive prices of the most valuable games in the world. For example, old Nintendo cassettes, preferably in their original packaging, fetch hundreds to thousands of euros on the general market.
In the video you can see the collection of TECHBOOK editor-in-chief Andreas Filbig. He sold the game “Little Samson” a year ago for around 250 euros. He bought it around 9 years earlier for just 25 euros.
Furby
The fluffy creatures with big ears and eyes were real chatterboxes. Even if they had a vocabulary of a few hundred words, we could hardly understand them. If we placed two next to each other, they wouldn’t stop talking. In 1998, Hasbro launched the talkative fleece creature. Anyone who still owns such an original, the Edition 70-800, could be lucky and sell their childhood Furby for a profit. Some collectors pay up to 250 euros for such an original that is still unused in the original packaging. However, other Furbys make significantly less profit.
Tamagotchi
The Tamagotchi was a schoolyard must-have in the ’90s. We could buy the little toy egg for a few marks and then tried to keep it alive. Easier said than done, because the electronic creature was not known for its longevity. Often only a restart helped. The Tamagotchi also had a really good restart a few weeks ago when it experienced a revival for its 20th anniversary. If you still have a first-generation Tamagotchi from 1997 and ideally have never used it, the little toy egg could be worth a few bucks.
Digimon Digivice
The Digivice comes from the anime series Digimon. For the Digiknights in the series, the most important item is the Digivice, which comes in different colors. Since the Digivice is no longer available in all versions, it is traded for a few hundred euros, among other things.
cell phones
Some of the mobile companions have become sought-after collector’s items. You can see which devices you need to look out for in our article:
In general, it is advisable not only to offer childhood treasures on the German market, as you can reach more collectors on the international market. As in many other areas, the following applies: the better the condition of the object, the higher the possible price.
