The corona measures are over for the time being, the ‘old normal’ seems to be back. On Ascension Day, the ANWB reports significant crowds around attractions such as Walibi Holland in Biddinghuizen and the start of the Tugboat Days in Zwartsluis. The roads around the so-called fashion outlets are also busy.
This morning, traffic to Walibi temporarily came to a standstill, after which the traffic jams started to build up in the direction of Lelystad. Just after noon, according to the ANWB, there was 8 kilometers of traffic jam on the dike from Enkhuizen to Lelystad alone. The delay at that time was more than an hour. It was still busy around 3 p.m. around Lelystad itself.
At Designer Outlet Roermond, where dozens of shops are located together and top brands are sold at a discount, you have to connect all day long to get in. According to the ANWB, there is mainly a traffic jam from the German border, with peaks earlier in the day in waiting times of eighty to one hundred minutes. In the afternoon, motorists still had to wait an hour.
There was also a queue on the Enkhuizen-Lelystad dyke, one of the routes to the Bataviastad outlet located in Lelystad. At the busiest time, the waiting time was an hour. In the course of the afternoon that had dwindled to ten minutes.
The ANWB also expects crowds again when the shops close, although traffic will be more spread out because the outlets are open longer due to the long weekend.
Tugboat days
Furthermore, it is currently busy at the start of the National Tugboat Days in the center of Zwartsluis. About two hundred tugs and pushers are moored there. The event takes place once every two years, but was canceled in 2020 due to the corona measures.
Now it was uncertain for a long time because of nitrogen regulations. ,,I’ve had sleepless nights”, says chairman Roel Schurink. “With some adjustments, such as fewer aggregates, we did receive a permit.”
Busiest evening rush hour
With more than 1120 kilometers of slow-moving traffic spread over 190 traffic jams, it was the busiest evening rush of the year last night. This means that the number of traffic jams around Ascension Day was comparable to before corona. In 2019, there were 1028 kilometers of traffic jams during the Ascension weekend. The previous record of this year was 785 kilometers. That was just before the May holiday.
