Old bicycles give more color and greenery in Sittard-Geleen | 1Limburg

Bicycles that can no longer be repaired are given a second life in Sittard-Geleen within the Fleurige Fietsenproject.

They are transformed by children into a work of art and are provided with flower boxes. The refurbished bicycles should bring more color to the city.

Own design
Students from group 6 of primary school Loedoes in Sittard transformed the first discarded bicycles into works of art on Wednesday. They did this on the basis of their own design, because initiator Sanne Janssen of Huts Spot does not just want the children to mess around, but to make them think about it. She had already visited the school with that message. “We want to make it more beautiful together. We need your help for that. So I also hold them accountable,” says Janssen.

Adoption
After the bicycles are ready, they are adopted by people and authorities from the city. The first bicycles will go to the Hoogstaete and Kollenberg care centers. Together with the residents, the students will soon provide the bicycles with plants at both locations. These will then be taken care of by the elderly. According to Janssen, this not only makes the city greener and more colorful, but also creates involvement and collaboration.

Last year
Enthusiasm for the project was already aroused last year when bicycles were also placed in the center. They were removed again in the autumn when the flowers had finished blooming. The wooden flower boxes also turned out not to be weather resistant.

The discarded bicycles are reinforced and this time provided with a metal flower box by students of DaCapo College.
