Old ammunition complex in Donderen as the backdrop for a theater performance about lonely young people

The old ammunition complex Donderboerkamp in Donderen is the setting for the new theater performance by Loods13 about loneliness. Young people will start production there in the coming months Canaries don’t talk back.

Two old barracks of 200 square meters are used for the theater performance. The aim of the spectacle is to bring lonely young people into contact with each other and to provide tools to regain control of their lives. “We are very happy with this location,” says Veerle Gnodde, marketer of the project. “It’s a perfect place to go to work.”

Loods13 first looked for a location in Assen, but was in the dark there. “We looked at a few locations, but they didn’t meet our requirements,” explains Gnodde. “It was difficult to find a place that was large enough and at the same time livable. There must be running water, because we will be working there all day.”

Ten young people will be working on the performance for the next three months. What exactly that will look like is not yet clear. The young people determine the content of the production and build their own theatre. “We start with an empty warehouse, so with nothing. It is certainly not a standard theater with stage and stands. It may just be that the audience has to walk or sit on the stage themselves,” says Gnodde.

The project will start next Monday. Those who still want to participate can still register. Transport is largely provided. “We are going to help with that. We want to pick up participants from the station in Assen,” says Gnodde. Performances are scheduled for the end of May.

Donderboerkamp is a former ammunition complex that was built in the late 1960s during the Cold War for the storage of goods, artillery, hand ammunition and personal armaments of military personnel. On the 14-hectare site between Norg and Donderen are bunkers, a guard building, a warehouse and staff residences. The piece of land was sold in 2009 and was given a new destination as an estate for art and culture.

At the beginning of this year, location theater company Peergroup left the location, which had been there since 2010.
