Uncertainty for Oksana from Andijk – NH Nieuws/Michiel Baas

These are complicated days for Oksana, who came to the Netherlands in 2015 and settled in Andijk. The grief of the war in her country, the uncertainty about the fate of her family who stayed behind in Kiev and the four relatives who will or will not come into her home. It is a dramatic sum of developments that dominate her life at the moment.

Also days in which the situation changes every day, Oksana now knows. At the end of last week, the foursome made the decision to leave Kiev and the rest of the family. With the end goal: the house of cousin Oksana in the safe Andijk.

doubt

Oksana would drive with her husband Adrian to the Polish-Ukrainian border to pick them up. But those plans changed when word came that the four family members would go to Berlin by train. But that also changed. At the moment they reside in the Polish city of Grajewo. A bus made available by Adriaan’s work was supposed to pick them up, but doubts have struck.

Oksana: “They were taken care of there. They sleep in a hostel, with five people in the room. That is of course not ideal. They are a bit busy in their heads, they can no longer think clearly. They all ask questions, which I don’t know the answer either. How to continue in the Netherlands, how long the war will last. Actually they want to go back home, but only the walls of one cousin’s house are still standing. There is no electricity. Apart from the fact that you can’t just enter Kiev at the moment.”

She emphasizes that the family must make the choice themselves. “It’s their decision. I’m not going push† They should take a moment to think carefully. I’ll just leave them alone for a while and see what they decide.”
