Official recognition for sausage rolls? Not if it were up to this baker

Now that the Limburg flan is officially recognized as a regional product by Europe, the big question is of course whether the Brabant sausage roll should also receive that recognition. The sausage roll would only be allowed to be called that in Brabant and would be given a different name outside the province. Eline Nagelkerke, maker of the Tastiest Brabant Sausage Roll 2023, thinks it is exaggerated and does not see anything in this recognition.

The Brabant sausage roll has become an indispensable part of the Netherlands and in December 2023 a real sausage roll shop even opened in Amsterdam. According to Nagelkerke, recognition, such as with the Limburg pie, can only get in the way of this fame. “It’s nice if the sausage roll is for sale throughout the Netherlands. It of course only makes the product more famous.”

The more famous, the better and this also applies to the popularity of the sausage roll abroad. “I think we can even sell them abroad,” Nagelkerke explains. “Spain is really a meat country. The chorizo variant would do well there.”

“People from Brabant love sausage bread, but we don’t go that far for our sausage roll.”

It took the Limburgers 7.5 years to get their pie to become a protected regional product. This means that the Limburg pie may only be sold under this name in Limburg and the pie may no longer be frozen. “They would have been better off coming up with new varieties of pie. I think it’s really nonsense that they were so concerned about this,” says Nagelkerke. “People from Brabant love sausage bread, but we don’t go that far for our sausage roll.”
