Transfers & benefits as reasons
Former Turkish national coach Senol Günes’ second term at Besiktas has come to an end after 41 games and a points average of 2.22. The 71-year-old announced his resignation on Friday after the 2-3 home defeat against FC Lugano in the Conference League. Besiktas led 2-0 after two goals from Vincent Aboubakar (38th/52nd), but conceded three more goals in the last ten minutes. In the 90th minute, Eric Bailly scored an own goal to make the final score.
Besiktas is fourth in the Süper Lig with 13 points after seven games. The “Eagles” are already six points behind defending champions Galatasaray and even nine behind Fenerbahce, who have won all league games so far. Günes took over the team in October 2022 as the successor to Valérien Ismaël. As a result, only three games were lost in the Turkish upper house and Besiktas took third place behind Gala and Fener. It was Günes’ second term in office; between 2015 and 2019 he won the championship twice with the Istanbul team.

In addition to the sporting achievements this season, the resignation is also due to the transfer period, which was disappointing for many fans compared to the local rivals. TM user “Trivela1903” writes in the Besiktas forum: “His points average may look good, but you couldn’t see a future there. The football that was played was catastrophic, the transfers for which he was partly responsible were the worst I have seen recently. His ego is another thing too. Burak Yilmaz (previously assistant coach; editor’s note) as interim coach could be very interesting. If he does well, I hope the new president gives him a contract until the end of the season.”
“Kikino” added: “It’s a shame it ended like this. Even though completely others should have resigned, he presents himself as a scapegoat. Even if his formations, substitutions and substitutions haven’t been particularly good lately. But he has done a lot for this club! All the best!”
