The World Athletics Championships will take place in Beijing for the second time in 2027.
The world association World Athletics announced the decision after the 234th meeting of its council, which met in advance of the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow (March 1-3). Beijing had already hosted the 2015 World Cup in the 2008 Olympic Stadium.
“With a population of more than 1.4 billion people, China is one of the largest sports markets in the world,” said WA president Sebastian Coe. This represents “a tremendous opportunity to grow our sport and our fan base in one of the largest commercial markets in the world.”
China is already hosting the World Indoor Championships in Nanjing next year. The last outdoor World Athletics Championships took place in Budapest last August, and Tokyo will host the title fights in 2025.
