Officer who killed George Floyd stabbed in jail, motive unknown

Derek Chauvin, the former American police officer who was convicted two years ago of killing black American George Floyd, was stabbed in an Arizona prison on Friday. Report that American media. Nothing is yet known about the motive for the stabbing.

The US Prisons Authority confirms that an inmate was stabbed at the facility in question, but does not name it. In a statement, the authority said that employees took “life-saving measures” and the victim was taken to a hospital for further treatment.

Chauvin, 47, who is serving a 20-year prison sentence, was transferred to prison in Arizona last August from a maximum-security prison in Minnesota. There he often stayed in an isolation cell, according to his lawyer “for his own safety”.

Floyd’s death in 2020 sparked anti-racism protests worldwide. The black American was arrested by Chauvin and colleagues on suspicion of forging a twenty-dollar banknote. Floyd, 46, died after Chauvin pressed a knee into his neck for several minutes during that arrest.
