Schöttel on Wanner: “The main thing is that everything is done seriously”
In view of the supposedly better sporting prospects at the DFB, Schöttel doesn’t think he has much of a chance of convincing the youngster to make a move, “but I have to do my job”. Wanner is “an extraordinary talent”, but they don’t want to do “anything actionist”.

“A lot is happening to Paul as a young player at the moment. My main concern is that everything is done seriously,” Schöttel is quoted as saying by “Kicker”. The former Austria international has already had a conversation with DFB manager Oliver Bierhoff about Wanner’s personal details, and in the next step he now wants to contact the player’s family in order to officially register the association’s interest there.
For the 16-year-old, the year 2022 has been running at top speed so far from a sporting point of view: at the beginning of January he got his first taste of the Bundesliga, made three appearances for the record champions within two weeks and collected 32 minutes of action in the upper house.

FC Bayern’s youngster Wanner: debut in the U21 national team at 16?
At the end of last month, FC Bayern then officially communicated the extension of the working paper, which originally expired at the end of the season. Although the club did not provide any information on the term, according to Hasan Salihamidzic it is “a long-term professional contract.” . The fact that he was already playing in the Bundesliga at the age of 16 confirms his class.”
It is not clear which national team Wanner will use his qualities for in the medium term. “I know that Paul has big goals, that he wants to win everything with Bayern and also become world champion,” said Schöttel. In such cases, he hopes for a kind of David Alaba effect: the Viennese matured into a world star at FCB and is now active for Real Madrid – and as a national player for Austria. On the other hand, it seems clear that Wanner will no longer play for Germany’s U17s. Rather, it is possible that the left foot will make his debut in coach Antonio Di Salvo’s U21s in the foreseeable future.
