OROctober is a special month for those who love getting lost in the immensity of the sky, contemplating the moon and constellations: a month full of unmissable events.
October is the month of the Moon, with the world day and the eclipse
We start on Saturday 21st with the Night of the Moon, the world day of which theItalian Amateur Astronomers Union is an official partner: an initiative promoted globally to propose telescope observations dedicated to our satellite.
On October 28th, however, keep your eyes on the sky for the partial eclipse which will also be visible from Italy, as the Uai recalls. The disk of the full Moon will appear obscured in a small portion of it, in the lower part. The Earth satellite will enter the twilight at 8.01 pm Italian time. The peak will be reached at 10.15pm.
The Nights of the Giants
But the October calendar doesn’t stop here: there are also Nights of the Giants, the 6th and 7th of the month, in honor of the gas giants Jupiter and Saturn. The evenings will coincide with the excellent period of visibility of these two planets, a few weeks away from their respective oppositions. A telescope will also allow you to easily locate Uranus and Neptunealso close to the moment of opposition to the Sun. The best period of observability, however, is awarded to Venus: in the early morning you will have almost 4 hours to admire it.
In October the return of solar time
The Moon will also be the protagonist of three interesting conjunctions: in fact, it will meet Jupiter twice in the same month in the constellation of Aries, on 1 and 29 October, and on 24 October Saturn in that of Aquarius. Over the course of the month the days will continue to get shorter until, on the night between Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th, solar time will return into force.
