Obscure auction of contents of bankrupt Yankee Doodle in Assen

America enthusiasts could indulge themselves in Assen. The contents of the bankrupt American restaurant Yankee Doodle went under the hammer. Today the restaurant opened its doors to interested parties once again. But the viewing day took a crazy turn.

“It’s incredibly dark here,” says viewer Bennie. He is one of the people who came to the diner to look for things. And that was quite a challenge, because the preparations for the auction did not go entirely according to plan. The building on the Borgstee was pitch dark, because it turned out to be disconnected from electricity that morning.

“When we got here, the alarm was off. A little later it turned out that the power was also cut off,” says auctioneer Jaap Herder. “We didn’t know that, otherwise we would have taken measures.”

And so the interested parties were forced to visit the household contents with the flashlights of their telephones. For example, viewer Yamen mainly takes a look at the things that have no link with the United States. “I’m here for the practical part, because we have our own catering business,” he says, shining a flashlight on the ovens in the dark room.

Bennie also doesn’t care much for the stuff with an American touch. It is therefore the first time that he sets foot in the restaurant. Nevertheless, he decides to take a look at a small version of the Statue of Liberty a little later. “This is a very nice thing, it even has lighting,” he points to the green-blue image.
