Flashback to 1997, when Matthew Perry hosted the US comedy show where Oasis performed live.
Whether close friends or distant fans – in the past few days, many people have paid tribute to Matthew Perry on social media, who died on October 29th at the age of 54. Oasis fans are now also remembering the “Friends” actor and remembering a very special moment in the past that the actor and the British band shared.
Perry hosted “Saturday Night Live” on October 4, 1997 and not only filled the popular American show with comedy sketches such as “Sarcasm 101” – the specialty of the “Friends” character Chandler Bing, whom the actor portrayed for ten years – but also featured Oasis as the episode’s musical guest. The group performed the songs “Acquiesce” and “Don’t Go Away” from their third studio album BE HERE NOW, which had just been released at the time. The final scene of the show was particularly memorable for the group’s followers. While the guest presenter says goodbye to his viewers, Noel and Liam Gallagher stand to his right and left.

Both the sitcom about the six New York friends and the Britpop band experienced great hype in the 90s. While “Friends” enjoyed success since it first aired in 1994, Oasis released their debut album DEFINITELY MAYBE in the same year and delivered several hits. A year later they appeared with tracks from their second record (WHAT’S THE STORY) MORNING GLORY? At number one in the British charts for ten weeks.
Liam Gallagher is also going on tour in 2024 to mark the 30th anniversary of Oasis’ debut album. On June 2, 2024, he will start the concert series in Sheffield, England, and will play twelve gigs in Great Britain and Ireland – three shows each in London and his hometown of Manchester.
